Hornbeck is saying that the young woman can have a bite of the apple, he is not the devil telling her to eat it, like Adam and Eve were told. He is saying that there is no orchard or trees like that, only a few ignorance bushes. He is comparing the people of Hillsboro to the biblical time of Adam and Eve and he says that there are not people that will tell you something bad, but there are a few that stretch the truth.
